Among countries in the region, Costa Rica stands alone. It has the oldest democracy, strongest economy, and largest middle class in all of Central America, factors that have contributed to its remarkable political stability. Free from the kind of turmoil and civil strife that has affected many of the countries in the region, the nation has developed into one of top tourist destinations in all of Latin America.
A virtual living nature museum, Costa Rica contains more than 850 bird species, 600 species of butterfly, and exotic species such as three-toad sloths, giant anteaters, wild peccaries, jaguars, and several different kinds of monkeys. Equally impressive is the wide range of geographical diversity. With both a Carribbean and Atlantic coast, there are certainly plenty of beaches, with everything from active volcanoes, rainforests, mangrove swamps, lowland jungles, and cloud forests in between.
You and your family can enjoy bird watching, observing wildlife, hiking along an active volcano, trekking through a cloud forest, whitewater rafting, hot springs, rainforest canopy tours, horseback riding, boat trips, and many other activities that are sure to leave a lasting impression. For water sport enthusiasts, a Costa Rican vacation offers world class sport-fishing, surfing, snorkeling, and of course plenty of swimming. For the kids, experiences such as visiting reptile or butterfly gardens, wildlife parks, nature reserves, and historical museums can be fun and educational at the same time. Even if you're not really a nature "lover" per se you're almost certain to find the natural beauty of Costa Rica breath taking and relaxing.
Many travel agencies specialize in family-friendly Costa Rican vacation packages, some of them offered by well known family-oriented companies such as Vacations by Disney. Tour packages generally include a diverse sampling of what the country has to offer and always include plenty of activities for the kids.
With such an incredible array of things to see and do, a Costa Rica family vacation is certain to create fond memories that will last a lifetime. If you and your family are looking for a fun, exciting, educational, and rewarding travel experience, few destinations are able to offer as rich a variety of sights and activities.

Enjoy having breakfast in Costa Rica!
What can you expect to eat for breakfast in Costa Rica? Well I guess it all depends where you stay. Many hotels serve buffet style breakfasts where you can get anything you want - fruit, cereal, eggs, bacon, yogurt, etc. etc. But then that would be the similar wherever you are the world from London to Beijing.
If you want to go local and get the breakfast enjoyed by Costa Ricans, you can go to a local eatery called a soda or a restaurant that serves breakfast. Just as in North America, it could be a quick bagel or toast or cereal, in Costa Rica it could be fruit salad or just cornflakes with banana.
However, if you have more time, then you have many options. Gallo pinto, sometimes served with bread dipped in sour cream, eggs - scrambled with onions or fried in tomato sauce. There are also corn pancakes called chorreadas. If you have a sweet tooth, there are also pastries, plain cake and pineapple patties. If you see a cake called Tres Leches (three milks), it is a Tico favorite. Three sorts of milk (evaporated, condensed and just regular milk) are poured over the cake with whipped cream on top.Gallo pinto (rice and black beans) is the staple food of Costa Rica and can be eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The picture above shows gallo pinto with scrambled eggs and a tortilla.
What do you drink for breakfast? Coffee, of course! Home grown Costa Rican coffee is famous around the world and where better to enjoy it. You can also visit a coffee plantation to learn more. Herbal teas are also widely available.
If you want something sweet, then a local favorite is agua dulce (sweet water). Sugar cane is boiled and reduced and then set in conical molds. Yes, sugar cane is also farmed in Costa Rica. The end result is called Tapas (lids). Some of this is scraped off and put into boiling water or milk and presto there's you agua dulce.

The Town of Santo Domingo, Costa Rica
The town of Santo Domingo was founded in 1848, and named after the Basilica dedicated to Santo Domingo de Guzmán. There are two beautiful colonial churches in Santo Domingo, Iglesia del Rosario (built between 1838-1844) and the Basílica de Santo Domingo de Guzmán (built in 1856).
The people of Santo Domingo, as most Costa Ricans, are religious and during Semana Santa (Holy Week) you can observe processions and demonstrations of their faith.
SantoDomingo manages to maintain its rural charm despite its central location between two heads of provinces. (Heredia and San José) Residents take pride in the colonial houses built of adobe; some of those remain in ruins and residents would rather not tear them down. Others are kept nicely despite earthquakes and aging.
Every Saturday, starting at 5:00 am, you can get a taste of the local customs by going to the Feria del Agricultor, (Farmer’s Market) where farmers sell fresh products directly to local residents. This provisional market lasts until noon.
